THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in South Coast, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Basalt columns and black sand at Reynisfjara
Skógar Museum
Turf houses, a driftwood fishing boat and a hoard of farm tools assembled by one man over sixty years. The best folk museum in the country, and it is right beside the waterfall.
Kvernufoss
Ten minutes up a gorge behind the Skógar museum: another waterfall you can walk behind, and usually empty.
Sólheimasandur DC-3
A US Navy plane that force-landed on the black sand in 1973 and was left where it stopped. Four kilometres each way on foot from the car park across flat nothing, or pay for the shuttle. Driving out to it is banned.
Þakgil
A campsite in a green canyon at the end of fourteen kilometres of gravel track off Route 1 east of Vík. Summer only, and not a road for a low car.
Katla ice cave from Vík
A guided super-jeep run up onto Kötlujökull to a cave streaked black with ash. It runs year-round, unlike the blue caves further east, which are strictly a winter thing.
