The lagoon ten minutes west of the famous one: smaller, with the glacier front right in front of you, and its own zodiac trips. Half the visitors and most of the effect.

Icelandic Mountain Guides' Blue Ice walk runs three and a half hours, all year, from around USD 144, with crampons, harness and a guide. On an Icelandic glacier none of those three is optional.

A museum built to look like a shelf of books, about the writer Þórbergur Þórðarson and life on this coast before there was a road. Good café, and several ice cave tours meet in the car park.

A headland out on the black sand reached by hay cart behind a tractor, with puffins, skuas and the spot where Iceland's first settler is said to have wintered. Guided trips only, summer only.

A short gravel spur off Route 1 to a moraine looking straight down a crevassed glacier tongue. Stop at the marked viewpoint: the terminus is unstable and the ice here is monitored for collapse.
