PICK YOUR BASE
There is no village at the lagoon — only a car park, a café and the road — so every bed is between 12 and 80 km away and the real choice is how far you are willing to drive in the dark.
Höfn — the nearest actual town
About 1,800 people on a spit of land 80 km east of the lagoon: harbour, supermarket, fuel, several restaurants and a 25-metre outdoor pool at Víkurbraut 9 open weekdays 06:45–21:00 and weekends 10:00–19:00 all year. It is also where the Reykjavík long-distance bus terminates. The trade-off is an hour each way to the ice.

Hali and Reynivellir — the farms 12 km east
A small cluster of farm hotels in Suðursveit, the first buildings you pass after the lagoon heading east, built around the Þórbergssetur centre and its restaurant. These are the closest beds to Jökulsárlón by a wide margin, but there is no shop, no fuel and no alternative kitchen.

Öræfi — Freysnes and Hof, on the Skaftafell side
Roughly 50 km west of the lagoon and 70 km east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, this scattering of hotels and farms sits next to Skaftafell's visitor centre and its trailheads. Choose it if your next day runs west rather than east; you get the national park on the doorstep and the lagoon as a morning trip.

Practical: book far ahead and plan the fuel
The park charges 1,110 ISK to park a car at Jökulsárlón — 450 for a motorcycle, more for minibuses — valid until midnight that day with unlimited re-entry, so an early and a late visit cost the same as one. Between Höfn and Freysnes there is no supermarket and effectively one café, so shop and fill up before you commit to the stretch.
