THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Golden Circle, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Gullfoss waterfall dropping into its canyon in winter
Friðheimar
A greenhouse growing tomatoes under lights right through the winter, with a restaurant among the vines and an Icelandic horse show. Booking is essential for both, and groups fill the slots.
Brúarfoss
A marked walk from its own car park to a set of falls that run an improbable blue. Muddy in wet weather and quieter than anything else on the circle.
Faxi
A wide, low waterfall on the Tungufljót with a salmon ladder beside it, five minutes off the road between Geysir and Selfoss. Almost nobody stops.
Skálholt
The seat of Iceland's bishops for seven hundred years, with a modern cathedral over a medieval crypt and a summer concert series in it.
Efstidalur farm ice cream
A working dairy between Laugarvatn and Geysir where the ice cream parlour looks straight into the cow shed. The cows are the ones in the tub.
