Lunch inside a working tomato greenhouse: tomato soup with unlimited bread, plus pasta and other dishes built on what is growing around you. The kitchen runs 11:30 to 16:00 daily and the wine bar 12:00 to 22:00. Book a table on their site; walk-ins are turned away in season.

A dairy farm that has been worked since the 1750s, now serving its own beef and dairy in a farm restaurant, with an ice cream barn where you eat looking through a window into the cowshed. Open 10:00 to 20:00, seven days a week.

The default lunch stop directly opposite Strokkur: soup, a bakery counter, a shop and toilets. It is where every coach on the loop eats, so it is at its worst between about 11:00 and 14:00 and perfectly pleasant either side of that.

The cheapest supermarket chain in the country and the last big one before the loop. Bread, skyr, cured lamb and a flask of coffee cost a fraction of a sit-down lunch, and there are picnic tables at Gullfoss and Þingvellir. The other national habit is the petrol-station hot dog — order it eina með öllu, with everything.
