Both of the town's clubs are in the Besta deild karla in 2026, Þór having come up as 1. deild champions in 2025, so the derby is a first-division fixture. KA play at Greifavöllurinn, a short walk from the centre.

Iceland's main ski area sits directly above the town. A winter day pass is 7,450 ISK for adults and 2,020 ISK for children aged 6 to 17; the mountain also opens in summer, when adult passes run 4,970 ISK on Thursdays and Fridays and 6,210 ISK at weekends.

Golf played through the night under the midnight sun at Akureyri Golf Club, held every June since 1986: 36 holes of Stableford over two competition days inside a four-day festival. The next edition is 24–26 June 2027.

The north's mountain trail race, run in late July from Akureyri, with four distances: 18 km, 28 km, 43 km and a 100 km. Registration opens well in advance and the longer courses take in the peaks behind the town.

A riding centre at Grýtubakki II on road 83 towards Grenivík, running since 1985 with around 160 Icelandic horses. Short tours go out all year and multi-day rides run in summer; prices are by arrangement, so contact them rather than expecting a booking page.
