EAT LIKE A LOCAL
For a town of twenty thousand Akureyri eats unusually well, and it does it in a few streets: the centre for restaurants, the shopping centre for cheap and warm, and an ice cream shop Icelanders treat as a landmark.
Hafnarstræti and the streets off Ráðhústorg
The centre's short pedestrianised run is where most of the town's restaurants and cafés are, close enough together that you can walk the whole choice in ten minutes before deciding. Kitchens close earlier than you expect outside summer.

The town's occasion restaurant, an international menu in an upstairs dining room on Skipagata with the view down Eyjafjörður. Book it for the last night rather than the first.

Brynja
Akureyri's ice cream institution, and the reason you will see people eating soft serve outdoors in February without comment. Icelandic ice cream is a year-round habit, not a summer one.

Iðunn mathöll at Glerártorg
The food hall inside the Glerártorg shopping centre, north of the centre: several counters, indoor seating, and supermarkets in the same building. The warm, cheap, weather-proof option when the fjord is doing its worst.
