Szentendre · Where to stay

PICK YOUR BASE
Almost nobody needs to sleep here — it is forty minutes from Budapest — so the choice is really between staying inside the old town for the empty early mornings and not staying at all.

Inside the old town
The lanes around Fő tér and up towards Templomdomb are where staying overnight actually pays off: the coaches leave in the late afternoon and the town is yours. Expect cobbles, steps and no car access to some doors.

By the HÉV station
The southern end of town by the terminus is flat, five minutes' walk from the main street and the obvious base if you are coming and going from Budapest late. Less charming, cheaper, and you never have to think about the last train.
The river road north towards Leányfalu
Guesthouses strung along the Danube north of town, quieter and usually cheaper, with the river path on your doorstep. The trade-off is that you are committing to a bike or the bus for everything.
Or just stay in Budapest
The H5 takes about forty minutes from Batthyány tér and Szentendre goes quiet early in the evening, so for most people this is a half-day trip rather than a base. Sleep in Budapest and come out mid-afternoon when the tour groups are leaving.
