EAT LIKE A LOCAL
Szentendre eats at lunchtime: the kitchens are aimed at day-trippers, the good meal here is the middle of the day, and by mid-evening most of the town has stopped serving.
Colourful cobblestone lane with hanging lampshades in Szentendre
Dumtsa Jenő utca
The pedestrian street running from the HÉV station up into Fő tér, and the town's main run of cafés, ice cream counters and shops. It is where you end up by default walking in from the train.
Lángos by the HÉV terminus
The stand near the station is the cheapest lunch in town and the standard Hungarian day-trip fuel: fried dough, sour cream, cheese. Eat it before you walk up into the old town, not after.
Fő tér terraces
The baroque main square is ringed with café terraces, and it is the place to sit with coffee and cake and watch the square fill and empty. You are paying for the address, not the kitchen.

Eat at lunch, not at dinner
The town empties when the last coaches and day-trippers go, and kitchens wind down with them. If you want a long sit-down meal, make it lunch; if you want dinner, book, or go back to Budapest for it.
