Skanzen open-air museum
Sztaravodai ut 75: around 300 relocated village buildings across 46 hectares, with a little train linking the regions. Closed Mondays.

Blagovestenska Church
Serbian Orthodox church on Fo ter with a gilded 18th-century iconostasis. Tiny and dim, and worth the small entry fee.

Kovacs Margit Museum
Vastagh Gyorgy utca 1: folk-inflected ceramic sculpture by Hungary's best-loved potter. About an hour, and the town's best museum.

Climb to Templomdomb
The hilltop Church of St John and its terrace give the classic red-roofs-and-Danube view. Free, and best in late afternoon light.

Getting there
HEV from Budapest
The H5 suburban line from Batthyany ter takes about 40 minutes. You need a supplementary ticket beyond the city boundary.
Danube boat
Mahart sails from Vigado ter in summer, roughly 90 minutes. Low water suspended the service mid-2026, so confirm before relying on it.
Getting around
The old town is entirely walkable. A local bus or a 40-minute walk gets you out to the Skanzen.
When to go
Best time to go
April-June and September, and after 4pm any day once the coach parties leave.
Cheapest months
Winter weekdays, though some galleries cut their hours right back.
Priciest & busiest
Summer weekends and the Advent market. Come midweek if you can.

Morning
HEV from Batthyany ter, then straight up Dumtsa Jeno utca into Fo ter ahead of the tour groups.
Late morning
Blagovestenska Church, the Kovacs Margit ceramics, then the short climb to Templomdomb for the view.
Lunch
Langos from the stand near the HEV station, or a long lunch at Aranysarkany on Alkotmany utca.
Afternoon
Out to the Skanzen for the reconstructed villages, or stay in town for the small private galleries.
Evening
A drink on the Danube promenade, then the HEV back to Budapest; the town shuts early.

Visegrad
Further up the Danube Bend: a hilltop citadel over the river's great curve, with Renaissance palace ruins below it.
Esztergom
Hungary's largest basilica on a bluff facing Slovakia, about an hour on from Szentendre by bus.
