Pecs eats cheaply off the covered market in the morning and properly on the two streets running west out of Szechenyi ter in the evening.
Pecsi Vasarcsarnok
The covered market at Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca 25, open 5am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 5am to 2pm on Saturday. Baranya produce, cured meat and cheese; closed Sundays apart from one stall.
Ferencesek utcaja and Irgalmasok utca
The two streets running west and north-west off Szechenyi ter carry most of the city's kitchens — Balkan Bisztro at Ferencesek utcaja 32, Bacchus at Irgalmasok utca 6-8 and Aranygaluska at Irgalmasok utca 5. Walk the block and read the boards before you sit down.
Elefantos Etterem, Jokai ter
Italian cooking and shellfish on the square where the nineteenth-century Feher Elefant inn stood, with one of the biggest terraces in the centre. Worth booking for a summer evening outside.
Mushrooms, and what to drink with them
Baranya is mushroom country and the market hall keeps a specialist mushroom stall that trades on Sunday evenings from May to November, when the rest of the hall is shut. The default glass with dinner in Pecs is a red from Villany, half an hour south.
