The things worth doing in Lake Balaton, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Tihany lavender fields
The peninsula's lavender flowers from mid-June into early July, with a small lavender house and a festival at peak bloom.
Kossuth Drinking Hall
Balatonfured's pavilion taps a fizzy, iron-rich mineral spring you can drink for free. Very much an acquired taste.
Sail or paddleboard
Balatonfured's marina rents boards and runs skippered sails. The lake is shallow and warm, so it rarely gets rough.
Loczy Cave
Limestone cave in the hills above Balatonfured with strikingly fluted walls. A short guided walk, and cool on a hot day.
Cycle the Balaton ring
A signed circuit of around 200km loops the whole lake. The northern stretch from Balatonfured to Badacsony is the prettiest part.
