The plan

Tihany Abbey
Benedictine abbey above the peninsula, founded in 1055, with King Andrew I's crypt underneath. Longer hours May to September.
Tagore Promenade
Balatonfured's tree-lined lakefront, planted with saplings by visiting writers since the 1950s. Free, and best at sunset.
Badacsony wine terraces
Basalt hill on the north shore covered in vineyards, with terraces pouring Olaszrizling and the rare Keknyelu above the water.
Festetics Palace, Keszthely
Kastely utca 1: baroque palace at the lake's west end with a vast historic library, carriage house and palm house. Open year-round.
Heviz thermal lake
A large natural warm lake you swim in, around 32C all year. The central bath building has been shut since 2025, so check before going.

Getting there

Train from Budapest
Direct trains from Budapest Deli or Kelenfold reach Balatonfured in about two hours along the northern shore.
Ferry across the lake
Balatonfured-Siofok and the short Tihany-Szantod car ferry run spring to autumn; the Tihany crossing takes about ten minutes.
Getting around
Buses link Balatonfured, Tihany and Badacsony but thin right out off-season. A bike or hire car opens up the north shore.

When to go

Best time to go
June and September: the lake is warm enough to swim and the towns are not heaving.
Cheapest months
October to April, though many lakeside places shut completely.
Priciest & busiest
July and August, especially weekends, when rooms can triple.

If you've got one day

Morning
Ferry or bus to Tihany for the abbey and the old thatched cottages, before the day-trippers land.
Late morning
Walk the peninsula's cliff path for the view over both the lake and the inner crater lake.
Lunch
Fish soup or grilled fogas on a Balatonfured terrace near Vitorlas ter, watching the yachts.
Afternoon
Swim off a Balatonfured beach, or drive west to Badacsony for vineyard terraces above the water.
Evening
A glass of Olaszrizling on the Tagore Promenade, then a slow walk past the Round Church.

Nearby & day trips

Szigliget Castle
Ruined 13th-century hilltop fort on the north shore. A short steep climb gives a full circle of lake and vineyards.
Siofok
The south shore's party town: beach clubs and bars along Petofi setany, packed in July and August, near-dead otherwise.
