A small grid town, an accessible volcano and chocolate workshops within a block of the square.
Volcán de Pacaya
A guided ninety-minute walk up a cinder cone with steam vents hot enough to toast marshmallows; horses are available for tired legs. Ages 8+.
ChocoMuseo chocolate workshops
Bean-to-bar workshops on the Calle del Arco lasting about two hours, with plenty of grinding and tasting. Book the morning session. Ages 5+.
Hobbitenango hilltop park
A hilltop park above the valley with rope swings, viewpoints and hobbit-hut cabins; a shuttle runs up from town. Ages 4+.
Finca Filadelfia
A working coffee estate ten minutes out with mule rides, a small train and a plantation tour that is short enough to hold attention. Ages 6+.
Cobbles and cold nights
The stone streets defeat strollers entirely — bring a carrier. At 1,530 metres evenings are cold, and rain arrives most afternoons May to October.
