The uninhabited island half an hour by boat from the old port: a whole Hellenistic town of houses, mosaics and the terrace of lions, and one of the largest archaeological sites in Greece. Boats run mornings only and you must come back on one, so you get a fixed few hours, with no shade and nothing much to eat.

The row of whitewashed windmills on the ridge above Mykonos Town, five minutes uphill from Little Venice. Free and always accessible, and the island's default sunset viewpoint, which also means the busiest.

The whitewashed cluster of chapels fused into one lopsided white mass at the edge of the Kastro quarter, near the old harbour. You look at it from outside; interior access is irregular and not worth planning around.

Small museum in Chora covering Greek merchant shipping and island seafaring, with ship models, instruments and charts, plus a garden of old lighthouse and navigation gear. Summer season only and easily done in an hour.

The island's inland village, about 8 km east of town, built around a 16th-century monastery with a carved marble bell tower. Buses run from Fabrika station, and lunch on the village square costs a fraction of the same meal in Chora.
