FIESTA SIDE
Athens drinks late and outdoors: bars barely stir before eleven, the serious cocktail rooms hide in scruffy blocks between Syntagma and Monastiraki, and nothing shuts early.
The Acropolis under morning light
The Clumsies
All-day bar at Praxitelous 30 that turns into a serious cocktail room after dark, run by bartenders with a long run of international awards behind them. Arrive before ten or expect to stand.
Baba au Rum
Rum-led cocktail bar at Klitiou 6, open 19:00 to 03:00 every day. Tables spill onto the pedestrian lane in summer and the room is small, so it fills from about ten onwards.
A for Athens rooftop
Rooftop bar above Monastiraki square at Miaouli 2-4, serving cocktails into the early hours with the lit Acropolis directly opposite. No bar reservations, so come before sunset if you want a seat at the rail.
Psyrri after dark
The tangle of lanes north-west of Monastiraki, packed with small bars, meze places and street tables that run late every night of the week. It is the densest drinking area in the centre and the easiest to wander without a plan.
Gazi and Technopolis
The old gasworks district west of Kerameikos, built around the Technopolis cultural complex, with the larger clubs and music venues and a strong LGBT scene. Metro line 3 stops at Kerameikos, which matters because it is a long walk back.
