Brühl's Terrace & Fürstenzug
The Balcony of Europe above the Elbe, then the porcelain-tile mural of Saxon rulers along Augustusstraße. Both free.
Getting there
Train from Berlin
EC and IC services run Berlin Hbf to Dresden Hbf in about two hours. It is the easiest approach and usually the cheapest.
Fly via Berlin or Prague
Dresden's own airport is small. Most travellers fly to Berlin, two hours by train, or Prague, about two hours by bus.
Along the Elbe
Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt paddle steamers connect Dresden with Meissen, Pillnitz and Saxon Switzerland in season.
When to go
Best time to go
May to September, when the Elbe meadows and Neustadt terraces fill up.
Cheapest months
January to March, once the Christmas markets have packed away.
Priciest & busiest
Advent weekends for the Striezelmarkt, plus May and September.

Morning
Frauenkirche as it opens, then the dome climb before the first tour groups reach the square.
Late morning
Walk Brühl's Terrace, past the Fürstenzug mural, and into the Zwinger courtyard and its fountains.
Lunch
Cross the Augustusbrücke into Neustadt and eat around Alaunstraße; prices halve the moment you leave the old town.
Afternoon
Wander the five themed courtyards of the Kunsthofpassage, then Pfunds Molkerei for the tiled dairy shop.
Evening
Dinner at Watzke's brewhouse, then live jazz at Blue Note or a beer in the Katy's Garage yard.
Nearby & day trips
Saxon Switzerland
40 minutes by S-Bahn to Rathen for the Bastei sandstone pinnacles and viewing bridge. Go on a weekday if you can.
Meissen
35 minutes on the S1. Europe's first porcelain manufactory runs daily tours, 9:00-17:00, and the hilltop castle is worth the climb.
