Glass chocolate factory on a spit of land in the Rhine, open daily 10:00-18:00. Book online to skip the queue.

Hohenzollern Bridge
Cross the padlock-covered rail bridge to Deutz for the classic view back at the cathedral, then walk the promenade.
Getting there
Fly Cologne/Bonn (CGN)
The S19 runs from the airport to Köln Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes - one of the fastest airport transfers in Germany.
ICE train
Frankfurt Airport is under an hour on the high-speed line, Brussels under two hours, Amsterdam under three.
Arrive at the Dom
Hauptbahnhof sits directly beside the cathedral, so you step off the train straight into the main sight.

Best time to go
May to September, plus the six days of Karneval in February or March.
Cheapest months
January, and November outside the Christmas market weekends.
Priciest & busiest
Karneval week and December, when beds vanish and prices double.
If you've got one day
Morning
Cathedral first, before the coach parties arrive - then straight up the south tower while your legs are fresh.
Late morning
Kolumba for quiet and daylight, or the Rheinauhafen crane houses if you would rather stay outside.
Lunch
Halve Hahn and a Kölsch at Päffgen on Friesenstraße; the waiters keep pouring until you cover the glass.
Afternoon
The Chocolate Museum, then the Rhine promenade and over the Hohenzollern Bridge for the skyline shot.
Evening
Brauhaus round in the Altstadt, live jazz at Papa Joe's, then Bootshaus in Deutz if you want a proper night.

Bonn
25 minutes by train: Beethoven's birth house, the old government quarter and a calmer stretch of the Rhine.
Düsseldorf
Half an hour north, and the rival city. Altbier instead of Kölsch, plus a Japanese quarter worth the trip alone.
