With the big hotels spread across separate motu, the overwater or beachfront bar at your own resort is where most visitors actually spend the evening. Drinks are priced accordingly, and there is no cheaper alternative within walking distance once you are on a motu.

The main village and ferry landing on the west coast is the island's only real settlement, and it is quiet at night: shops and the market close early and what stays open is a handful of snack bars rather than a bar scene. Useful for a cheap plate and a beer, not for a late night.

The island's regular evening entertainment is Polynesian dance, which the tourist board lists alongside local arts and crafts as the way to see the culture. These are programmed by the hotels rather than by public venues, so schedules move around and you should ask your hotel's desk which night is on.

The Matira end of the main island carries the densest run of independent restaurants, and the tourist board's own pitch for eating here is a meal at the water's edge with local and international cooking. It is the one stretch where you can walk between a few places instead of taking a boat.

If you cross to the main island for the evening, the hotel launch timetable, not closing time, sets when your night ends, so check the last return before you leave. There is no evening public transport on the coast road either, so agree a way back with your hotel or driver in advance.
