The things worth doing in Provence, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Gordes
The stacked stone village everyone photographs, with the classic view from the belvedere on the road in.
Arles
A Roman arena and theatre still in use, plus the streets and cafés Van Gogh painted while he lived here.
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse
The Sorgue emerges from the base of a cliff here. It is dramatic in spring and close to a trickle in high summer.
Okhra ochre works
A former ochre factory 2km from Roussillon on the route d'Apt, open 1 February to 20 December, with pigment workshops and free parking.
Les Baux-de-Provence
A ruined fortress on a limestone spur above the Alpilles, with the Carrières des Lumières in the quarry below it.
