Avignon's café square: heaving until late in July, and quiet by ten o'clock in February.

Most Luberon villages have exactly one bar on the square and it closes early. Plan dinner around that, not the other way round.

Côtes du Rhône and Ventoux estates run late-afternoon tastings, and almost all of them want a booking.

Open-air concerts and film nights run through July and August in the squares. Ask at the mairie or the tourist office for the week's list.
