This is a tiny walled village built on a rock, so it is a good day out for children who like climbing and a hard one for anyone pushing a buggy — and the bay outside is more interesting than the island for most of them.
A short guided walk on the sands
Guides certified by the préfecture run bay walks of about 1h30 to 2h that go barefoot onto the sand to find the quicksand and show how it behaves. It is the part children remember, and the tourist office keeps the list of licensed guides and takes the bookings.

Watching a grande marée come in
On the biggest tides the sea returns fast enough to surround the Mont, and there are only two in 2026: 14 August at 21:28 and 12 September at 22:02. Arrive one to two hours before high water, and expect to wait another hour or so afterwards before the causeway is passable again.
The ramparts
The walls circling the base of the village are free, open at any hour, and give the bay from every angle without paying for the abbey. For children it is the best part of the Mont: it is a walk on a castle wall, and it is short enough to finish.
Leave the buggy in the car
The official advice is blunt about this: the village is cobbled with a great many steps and pushchairs are difficult. With small children, a carrier works and wheels do not, and the climb to the abbey is stairs most of the way.
Check the tide before you plan the day
Bay tide times are based on the SHOM figures for Saint-Malo, with about five minutes added, and the tourist office publishes the coefficients month by month along with a downloadable calendar. High coefficients are what make the water worth watching; low ones mean the sea stays a long way out all day.
