Museum and science centre at Pohjoisranta 4 combining the Regional Museum of Lapland with the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Exhibitions open Tue-Sun 10-18, closed Mondays; 22 euros adult, 17 reduced, 10 for ages 7-17 and 54 for a family of four, and a Culture Pass covers Korundi too.

At Tähtikuja 1 on the Arctic Circle, roughly 8 km north of the centre. Open every day of the year and free to walk into, with the Arctic Circle line marked across the central square; the individual attractions, reindeer rides and Santa photographs are all charged separately.

Metsähallitus's hands-on forest exhibition at Ounasjoentie 6, next to Arktikum. Seven euros full, five reduced, with forestry machines to operate and a shop; the same building is where you ask about hiking, fishing and hunting elsewhere in Lapland.

About 80 km south at Rovaniementie 29 in Ranua, and the region's zoo of northern species. The wildlife park is open daily 10-18; it needs most of a day with the drive, so treat it as an excursion rather than an afternoon.

At Lehtoahontie 27 outside the city, rebuilt each winter. The snow hotel opens on 15 December and the winter season runs to 31 March; a day visit is 35 euros for adults and 17 for children 2-12, and packages include transport from Rovaniemi. Nothing to see here between April and November.
