The wooden Old Town on the hill and the row of ochre-red riverside storehouses below it are what everyone comes for, and Visit Porvoo calls the view one of Finland's most photographed national landscapes. Costs nothing; the lanes are cobbled and steep, so wear something sensible.

Founded in 1896 and one of the oldest museums in Finland, covering the material and cultural heritage of Porvoo and Eastern Uusimaa. Open Wed-Sun 12-16, extended to 18 on the first Wednesday of the month; admission 12 or 8 euros, free for some groups.

The outlet of the family confectionery that has been making sweets in Porvoo since 1871, at Teollisuustie 21 A, a little out from the Old Town. Kisses, truffles, liquorice, toffee and handmade chocolate; open Mon-Fri 9-17 and Sat 9-15, closed Sundays.

A converted factory at Läntinen Aleksanterinkatu 1 holding the Porvoo Art Hall gallery, two restaurants and two cafes plus event halls. The Art Hall is open Tue-Fri 10-18 and Sat-Sun 11-16, closed Mondays.

Porvoo's national urban park runs from the river mouth out through the surrounding landscape and is the town's walking and cycling ground. Free, and the obvious way to see the Old Town from the water side rather than in the crowd on Jokikatu.
