One of the world's oldest ski marathons, first run in 1960 and part of the Worldloppet series: 63 km classic from Otepää to Elva, with 31 km classic and freestyle races starting at Arula and also finishing in Elva, plus relays, vintage and children's races. Held in February.

The mass-participation road ride from the same organisers, held in September — the 2026 edition is on 19 September. Thousands enter, so the city is busy that weekend; distances, entry and route are on the Tartu Maraton site.

Estonia's World Rally Championship round, run on fast gravel roads in South Estonia; the 2026 dates are 16–19 July. Organised by Estonian Autosport Events, with spectator zones, passes and access rules published on the rally site well before the event.

The city's Premium liiga football club, founded in 1989, playing at Coop staadion (Sepa 15a) and Tamme staadion (Tamme pst 1). The Estonian season runs March to November; fixtures and tickets are on the club site.

The university's basketball team, the defending Estonian champions, playing the Estonian–Latvian league and European cup ties at the University of Tartu Sports Hall. The season runs roughly October to April; check the club calendar for home dates.
