Getting there
Train from Tallinn
Elron runs frequent services over the 185 km in about two hours. Book online; cheap, quiet and reliable.
Coach from Tallinn
Buses leave the Tallinn terminal roughly every half hour and take about two and a half hours, often for less than the train.
Fly to Tartu (TAY)
A small airport 9 km out with limited scheduled links. Almost everyone arrives overland from Tallinn instead.
When to go
Best time to go
May to September, when terraces open and the riverbank fills with students.
Cheapest months
November to March. Rates drop hard, but December gives barely six hours of daylight.
Priciest & busiest
Late August and September, when term starts and conferences fill the hotels.

Morning
Coffee on Town Hall Square, then up Toomemägi to the cathedral ruins and across Angel's Bridge.
Late morning
The University of Tartu museum and main building, including the student lock-up in the attic.
Lunch
Cross to Aparaaditehas and eat in the old factory yard, then browse its studios and bookshop.
Afternoon
Bus or cycle out to the Estonian National Museum on the runway; allow at least two hours inside.
Evening
Back to the centre for wine at Vein ja Vine, then a late one at Genialistide Klubi.
Nearby & day trips
Ice Age Centre, Äksi
Twenty minutes north by Lake Saadjärv: a well-made museum on glaciation and the mammoth steppe.
Otepää and Lake Pühajärv
An hour south: Estonia's winter-sports hills, good for skiing in February and swimming in July.
