Getting there
Fly to Tallinn (TLL)
The airport is 4 km from town and tram 4 reaches Old Town in about 15 minutes. Wide European short-haul network.
Ferry from Helsinki
Tallink, Viking Line and Eckero cross the Gulf of Finland in about two hours, docking a short walk from Old Town.
Train or coach overland
Elron trains from Tartu and Narva reach Balti jaam; Lux Express coaches run from Riga in roughly four and a half hours.
When to go
Best time to go
June to August: warm, festival-heavy, and light until nearly midnight.
Cheapest months
February and March. Hotels are cheap but you get only about seven hours of light.
Priciest & busiest
Midsummer to early August, plus the December Christmas market weekends.
If you've got one day
Morning
Start on Raekoja plats before the cruise groups land, then follow the town wall round to Fat Margaret and the harbour gate.
Late morning
Climb Toompea for the Kohtuotsa view, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the quiet Danish King's Garden.
Lunch
Eat on the street-food floor of Balti Jaam Market, or take a longer lunch in the Telliskivi workshops next door.
Afternoon
Walk or tram to Noblessner for Seaplane Harbour's submarine, then follow the seafront promenade back.
Evening
Beers at Põhjala Tap Room in the old factory, then a speakeasy cocktail at Whisper Sister near Old Town.

Estonian Open Air Museum
Twenty minutes west at Rocca al Mare: relocated farmsteads, a working inn and a wooden church in coastal forest.
Lahemaa National Park
An hour east: bog boardwalks, baroque manors and a boulder coast. Doable in a day, much better with a night.
