SPORT & SEASON
Unusually for a small island, Saaremaa has a club in Estonia's top football division; the rest of the sporting year is a gravel rally in October, a golf course, and a great deal of flat road for cycling.
Kuressaare Castle and its moat on Saaremaa island, Estonia
FC Kuressaare
Saaremaa's Premium liiga football club, playing at Kuressaare linnastaadion, Rootsi 7, and describing itself as a regional club that gets island players to the top level. The season runs March to November; fixtures and tickets are on the club site.
Saaremaa Rally
The island's motorsport weekend, run by Saaremaa Ralli MTÜ on gravel and back roads; the 2026 edition is 9–10 October. Stage locations and spectator information go up on the rally site shortly beforehand, and accommodation across the island fills for it.
Saare Golf
A golf course on the edge of Kuressaare whose season, in a mild year, runs into November. Visitors are welcome; green fees and tee times are arranged by phone or email rather than through an online booking system.
Cycling the flat roads
Saaremaa's roads are flat, quiet and long. The coast road west from Kuressaare through Nasva and Mändjala is the easy half-day; the peninsulas are full-day rides into a wind that rarely drops. Hire in Kuressaare, or bring your own on the ferry — bikes cross without a booking.
Everything indoors is on the mainland
Beyond football there is no top-flight club sport on the island: the nearest top-division basketball is in Tallinn and Tartu, four hours or more away with the ferry, and the same goes for ice hockey. Plan around the football calendar or the October rally instead.
