Pyramids of Giza
Go at opening with water and hats, and let older children walk the desert track behind the plateau to the panorama. Ages 5+.
Grand Egyptian Museum
Air-conditioned, vast and built for crowds, with a children's museum and the Tutankhamun collection; three hours minimum. Ages 6+.
Felucca on the Nile
An hour under sail from the Garden City or Zamalek moorings at sunset, hired by the boat rather than the head. Ask for life jackets. All ages.
Al-Azhar Park
Grass, fountains and a view over the old city from a hill built on a rubbish tip, with playgrounds, cafés and a small entry fee. All ages.
Traffic, heat and timing
Crossing roads is genuinely dangerous — use bridges and taxis. Sightsee before eleven, rest through the afternoon, and eat late like everyone else does.
