WITH KIDS
A sand spit, a desert dune and a buried church — geography doing the entertaining.
Yellow Skagen houses and beach grass
Grenen sandspit
Walk or ride the tractor bus to the point where two seas meet. Paddling only: the currents where they collide are genuinely dangerous.
Råbjerg Mile
A migrating dune the size of a small desert, moving north each year. Children from about three can run down it until their legs give out.
Sønderstrand beach
A wide south-facing beach with shallow, calmer water and lifeguards through the summer. Cars are allowed on parts of it, so keep to the marked areas.
Skagens Museum
The painters' collection is bright, small and quickly walked, and the Anchers' house next door shows how they lived. Good from about seven upwards.
Wind, sun and bikes
The wind blows constantly and disguises sunburn — hats and cream even on grey days. Hire bikes and trailers for the week rather than by the day.
