THINGS TO DO
Andersen is unavoidable and worth an afternoon, but the more interesting day is the open-air village on the southern edge of town or the castle further down Funen.
Half-timbered houses in Odense
H.C. Andersens Hus
H.C. Andersen Haven 1, in the old quarter where he was born: a rebuilt museum of interactive rooms rather than a period house, open 10:00-17:00 with tickets through shop.museumodense.dk.
Kunstmuseum Brandts
Amfipladsen 7, five floors inside a former textile factory covering contemporary art, photography and film. Closed Monday; Thursday until 20:00, Saturday until 18:00, otherwise 10:00-17:00.
Den Fynske Landsby
Sejerskovvej 20 in Odense S: an open-air museum of relocated 19th-century Funen farms and workshops with animals, kitchen gardens and volunteers in period dress. Typically 10:00-16:00; part of Museum Odense.
Odense ZOO
Søndre Boulevard 306, roughly 9:00-17:00 with the entrance closing an hour before the gates. Camp Kiwara lets families sleep in shelters on the savannah section among lions and giraffes.
Egeskov Slot
Moated Renaissance castle on southern Funen, an easy drive or bus ride from Odense, still a family home and surrounded by gardens, vehicle collections and treetop walkways. Open in season, typically 10:00-17:00.
