ON A BUDGET
A granite island in the Baltic with smokehouses, round churches and 235 kilometres of cycle path.
Round church and cliffs on Bornholm
Allinge and the campsites
Hostels sit at Rønne and Allinge, with campsites at Sandvig in the north and Dueodde in the south. Ferry-and-bed packages are cheapest outside July.
What a day costs
DKK 450–800, roughly $65–115, camping and self-catering. Add the ferry, and expect a summer surcharge on everything from beds to smoked herring.
BAT buses and rail paths
The island bus network sells cheap day cards and reaches everywhere. Bikes are better: the cycle routes follow disused railway beds and are mostly flat.
Free by day
The Hammershus castle ruin, the white sand at Dueodde, the coastal path along the northern granite, and the cliff walk at Helligdomsklipperne.
Gudhjem and Allinge
The smokehouse terraces and harbour bars in these two villages are where travellers, cyclists and sailors end up on summer evenings.
