EAT LIKE A LOCAL
Brno eats Moravian rather than Bohemian: tank lager, a lot of pork, and wine from villages an hour south instead of beer-hall Prague.
Zelny trh - the vegetable market
The sloping market square is still a working produce market rather than a display one, and it is the cheapest way to put a picnic together in the centre. Come in the morning while the stalls are full.

Jakubske namesti and the lanes off it
The block bounded by Jakubske namesti, Behounska and Kozi holds most of the centre's kitchens within two minutes of each other, so it is the part of town where you walk until something looks right rather than book ahead.

Moravian wine, not Bohemian beer
Brno is the capital of Moravia and the wine villages around Znojmo, Mikulov and Velke Pavlovice are within an hour, so the vinoteky here pour local Veltlinske and Ryzlink by the glass. In early autumn ask for burcak, the cloudy part-fermented must sold for only a few weeks.
