Brno

EUROPE · FIESTA SIDE

The plan

Villa Tugendhat
Mies van der Rohe's 1930 UNESCO house. Interiors only by advance booking and slots go weeks out; the garden is walk-up.
Spilberk casemates
Hilltop fortress whose baroque cellars became a Habsburg prison. Guided casemate tour plus a lookout tower over the roofs.
Ossuary at St James
Second-largest ossuary in Europe, around 50,000 people, only rediscovered in 2001. Reserve through TIC Brno in summer.
10-Z nuclear bunker
Cold War shelter dug under Spilberk hill: unheated, dripping and properly bleak. Take a jacket even in August.
Book a cocktail bar
Brno out-drinks Prague on cocktails. Reserve Super Panda Circus a week out and walk in at Bar, ktery neexistuje.

Getting there

Train from Prague
RegioJet and Czech Railways run every half hour and take two and a half hours, with reserved seats and coffee service.
Train from Vienna
Ninety minutes direct from Wien Hauptbahnhof and one of the cheapest cross-border hops in Central Europe.
Fly into Vienna (VIE)
Brno's own airport barely operates. Most travellers land at Vienna and take a direct bus or train onward.

When to go

Best time to go
May to June and September: students back, terraces open, Moravian wine cheap
Cheapest months
January and February, when the underground sites cut hours and hotels empty
Priciest & busiest
Trade fair weeks at the Exhibition Centre, when the whole city sells out

If you've got one day

Morning
Petrov cathedral and the Cabbage Market, then down into the Labyrinth of cellars beneath the market stalls.
Late morning
Climb Spilberk for the casemate tour and the view back across the red roofs of the old town.
Lunch
Moravian cooking and tank lager near the Old Town Hall, then find the stuffed dragon hanging in its passage.
Afternoon
Tram out to Villa Tugendhat for your booked slot, or the St James ossuary if the tickets were gone.
Evening
Standing beer at Vycep Na stojaka, cocktails at Super Panda Circus, then a late band at Kabinet Muz.

Nearby & day trips

Moravian Karst caves
Punkva Caves and the Macocha abyss forty minutes north, with an underground boat ride. Book the timed slot online.
Mikulov and Palava
An hour south to limestone hills, wine cellars and a hilltop chateau, with a harvest festival every September.
