A shallow sand beach, cellars to get lost in, and boats to calmer water.
Bačvice beach
Sand rather than pebble, and shallow enough to wade a hundred metres out. Showers, pedalos and ice cream on the promenade behind.
Marjan forest park
Stone steps up through pines to a chapel and a viewpoint, with playgrounds at the bottom and shade the whole way. From about five.
Diocletian's cellars
Vaulted Roman substructures under the palace — cool, dim and satisfyingly cavernous. Half an hour, and a good midday retreat.
Aquapark Dalmatia
Slides, wave pool and a toddler zone at Solin, twenty minutes out by bus; open through the summer months only.
Marble and ferry booking
Palace stone is slippery in rain and strollers manage only the Riva. Ferries to Hvar and Brač sell out for cars in July and August.
