THINGS TO DO
Hvar Town can be seen in a morning, so the real choices are vertical — the fortress above the roofs — and horizontal, out to the Greek field system on the far side of the island.
Fortica, the Spanish Fortress
The fortress on the hill above Hvar Town, reached on foot by a stepped path from behind the main square. Open 09:00–23:00, €12 — or take the €15 combined ticket, which also covers the Theatre and Arsenal, the Loggia, the Clock Tower and St John's Church.

Hvar Theatre and the Arsenal
The town theatre occupies the upper floor of the Arsenal on the main square, open 09:00–21:00 for €10, or included in the €15 combined town ticket. Go for the room itself rather than the display.

Franciscan Monastery and Museum
On the shore just round from the harbour, open 09:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00 and closed Sundays; €10. The collection is built around the monastery's Last Supper canvas, and the cloister is the coolest place in town at midday.

Stari Grad Plain
The Greek field system laid out from 384 BC by colonists from Paros who founded Pharos, still worked on the same 180 × 900 m plots divided by dry-stone walls, and UNESCO-listed in 2008. It is flat farmland behind Stari Grad on the north side of the island, so it rewards a bicycle and means nothing from a car window.
St Stephen's Cathedral
The cathedral closing the east end of Hvar Town's main square, open 09:00–12:30 and 17:00–19:30 for €2 — the cheapest ticket on the island. The free-standing bell tower beside it is the town's landmark.
