ON A BUDGET
An expensive island town with cheap ferries off it — sleep east if the dorm prices bite.

Hvar Town and Jelsa
Hostels cluster in the lanes above the Riva in Hvar Town; Jelsa, thirty minutes east by bus, costs a third less in August.
What a day costs
Figure €45–75, roughly $50–85: dorm €20–35 in season, bakery and konoba lunch €12–20, buses and a boat €8–15.
Getting around cheap
Jadrolinija catamarans reach Split in an hour; island buses connect Hvar Town, Stari Grad and Jelsa, timed loosely to the ferries.
Free by day
St Stephen's Square and the Riva cost nothing, and the steep path down to Dubovica beach ends at clear water and one small konoba.
Where travellers meet
Hula Hula sits on the coast path west of town and runs a sunset session most days in season; the whole hostel contingent walks over.
