Lapad and Gruž
The peninsula west of the centre has the affordable beds, a supermarket and a beach; buses run into the old town every ten minutes.
What a day costs
Around €50–85 a day, roughly $55–95: dorm €22–40 in season, bakery and konoba food €15–25, buses and one sight €12–25.
Getting around cheap
Libertas city buses cost less from a kiosk than from the driver; Gruž is the port for ferries, catamarans and the Montenegro coaches.
Free by day
The Stradun and the Ploče gate views cost nothing, and so does swimming off the rocks at Banje or under the Buža cliffs.
Where travellers meet
Buža is a hole in the city wall with a bar behind it and cliff-jumping in front — the reliable late-afternoon rendezvous.
