There is no organised sport here in any real sense — no club, no gym and no road to cycle on; what you get is a boat, a paddle and a sandbar.
Football: nothing nearer than the Central Valley
Limón province has no Primera División club. The nearest top-flight football is Deportivo Saprissa in Tibás, which from here means a boat, two buses and most of a day. In the village it is the pitch and the television.
The village pitch
The football field in the middle of the village is where the local game happens, most reliably in the late afternoon once the heat drops. Standing and watching is entirely normal; joining in depends on who is there.
Kayak and canoe the canals
Paddling is the one properly active thing to do here, and the narrower canals are open only to paddled craft rather than motorboats. Rentals and guided paddles are arranged in the village, and a guide is required inside the national park.
Sportfishing at Barra del Colorado
The refuge north of Tortuguero is the tarpon and snook water that first put this coast on the map, reached by boat from the village. It is a specialist and expensive day out and has to be arranged in advance.
Walking the beach is the only run
The sandbar gives you several kilometres of flat beach, and with no roads it is the only place to run or walk any distance. Go at first light — there is no shade, and during nesting season beach access at night is restricted to guided tours.
