National circuit and longboard events run at Tamarindo and neighbouring Playa Grande through the dry months, December to April, and are free to watch from the sand.

The province's professional club plays at the Estadio Chorotega in Nicoya, about an hour and a half away. Apertura August–December, Clausura January–May.

Sailfish and marlin run off this coast from December into April, with boats out of Tamarindo and Flamingo; shared charters cut the cost sharply.

Guanacaste's cattle town holds its fiestas in January — topes on horseback and bull-dodging in a wooden ring, with nothing killed. Half an hour inland.
