THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in San José, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
The Costa Rican Supreme Court building at dusk
Museo del Jade
A modern block beside the Plaza de la Democracia holding a very large pre-Columbian jade collection over several floors.
Feria del Agricultor
Saturday morning farmers' markets run in most neighbourhoods; the Zapote one is among the biggest. Fruit you will not recognise, sold by the kilo.
Barrio Amón on foot
The coffee-baron quarter still has its tin-clad Victorian houses, now galleries, embassies and small hotels. An hour at a slow pace.
Coffee mill tour
The farms on the slopes above the city run mill-to-cup tours; Doka and Britt are the closest to the airport side and easy as a half day.
La Sabana
The old airport turned into the city's park: running paths, a lake, football pitches and the Costa Rican art museum in the former terminal.
