Costa Rica's capital is a working city rather than a resort: coffee-boom architecture, a serious run of museums, market sodas and bar streets that most itineraries skip entirely.

Museo del Oro Precolombino
Pre-Columbian goldwork in vaults under the Plaza de la Cultura. Open daily 9am-4.30pm; around ₡8,800 for foreign adults, free on 18 May.

Museo Nacional
The old Bellavista fortress, bullet scars and all, entered through Plaza de la Democracia. Tuesday to Saturday 8.30am-4.30pm, Sunday from 9am, closed Monday. US$11.

Teatro Nacional
The 1897 opera house on the Plaza de la Cultura, open 9am-4pm. The box office keeps the same hours if you want an evening concert.

Mercado Central
A block of covered alleys: butchers, spice stalls, coffee roasters and counter sodas serving casado. Go before noon and carry small notes.

Barrio Escalante
The city's eating street runs east of the centre along Calle 33: small kitchens, bakeries and taprooms in a few walkable blocks. Busiest Thursday to Saturday.

Getting there
Fly into SJO
Juan Santamaría International sits in Alajuela rather than the capital itself. Allow the better part of an hour into the centre once traffic is counted.
Liberia is the other door
Daniel Oduber International (LIR) in Guanacaste serves the north-west beaches. If your trip is Tamarindo and Nicoya only, it saves a long transfer.
Domestic hops and shuttles
Sansa flies from San José to Quepos, Tamarindo, Drake Bay, Tortuguero, Nosara, Tambor, Cóbano, La Fortuna, Limón and Golfito. Tourist shuttle vans are the road alternative.
When to go
Best time to go
December to April is the dry season, and the Central Valley stays mild rather than hot at 1,150m.
Cheapest months
May, June, September and October are cheapest, with clear mornings and heavy afternoon rain.
Priciest & busiest
Christmas to New Year and Easter week, when domestic travel fills everything and the museums close on the holidays themselves.
If you've got one day
Morning
Start at the Mercado Central while it is still trading properly, then walk south to the Plaza de la Cultura.
Late morning
The gold museum underneath the plaza, then look into the Teatro Nacional across the road.
Lunch
A casado at a counter soda in the market, or something slower in Barrio Amón if you want a table.
Afternoon
The Museo Nacional in the Bellavista fortress, then the butterfly garden and the stone spheres in the courtyard.
Evening
Walk out to Barrio Escalante and work along Calle 33 rather than committing to one restaurant.
Nearby & day trips
Poás Volcano
An hour and a half north, a crater you look straight down into. Entry is timed and sold through SINAC's online system, and the park shuts at short notice on gas readings.
Cartago and the Orosi valley
The basilica at Cartago, then a loop through coffee terraces, hot springs and the Tapantí reserve at the end of the road. Tapantí is also on the online booking system.
