FIESTA SIDE
Where Puerto Viejo goes after dark — bars, live music and the late ones worth staying up for.
The Caribbean shoreline at Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Seafront bars
The Puerto Viejo waterfront is a run of open-sided bars playing reggae and soca, busiest from about nine, with the crowd spilling onto the sand.
Soundsystem nights
Different bars take different nights, so the town moves as one body. Ask at your hostel in the afternoon and you will get the week's rota.
Salsa Brava lookout
The bar side of the reef break. Watch the wave over a beer in the afternoon and stay for a sunset that happens behind you, not in front.
Punta Uva after dark
A couple of beach bars south of town serve until the last table leaves, which is a calmer night than the centre.
Live calypso in Cahuita
Older calypso and mento players still perform on this coast, more often in small bars in Cahuita than in Puerto Viejo. Worth the taxi.
