Surf lessons
Jacó's beach break is where a lot of Costa Rica learns. Schools run two-hour group lessons and usually throw in the board for the rest of the day.

Quad and ATV tracks
Trails up behind the town to waterfalls and viewpoints. Dusty in the dry season and genuinely muddy in the wet.

Playa Herradura and Los Sueños
The marina north of town: sportfishing fleet, a calm bay and a completely different price bracket to the strip.

Bijagual waterfall
One of the taller falls in the country, inland from Tárcoles on private farmland, with a steep walk down and a harder walk back up.

The south end of the bay
Walk to the rocks at the far end for the sunset without the beach-bar soundtrack. Ten minutes from the strip and a different town.
