WITH KIDS
Pink dolphins, a town with no cars and a river the width of a county — but a serious journey to reach.
The Amazon river winding through rainforest
Puerto Nariño
Two hours upriver, a car-free town of walkways above the mud, with pink and grey dolphins in the nearby Lago Tarapoto. Ages 6+.
Reserva Tanimboca
Canopy platforms, a zip line and short jungle walks fifteen minutes out of town — the easiest introduction to the forest. Ages 8+.
Isla de los Micos
A river island with a large squirrel monkey population that swarms visitors carrying fruit. Crowded and staged, but children rarely mind. Ages 5+.
Night caiman spotting
Short after-dark boat trips with a torch along the creeks; guides catch and release small caimans. Under an hour suits younger children. Ages 8+.
Vaccines, heat and rain
A yellow fever certificate is routinely asked for, and malaria prophylaxis is worth discussing beforehand. Rain falls in any month, heaviest December to May.
