Hostels sit inside the centre grid within a few blocks of O'Higgins, with campgrounds along the lake and on the Caburgua road. Book ahead for January–February and for Ironman weekend in January; in May, June and September you can generally walk in.

A guided Villarrica ascent starts around CLP 150,000 with a Pucón operator, rafting the lower Trancura from about CLP 30,000, hydrospeed CLP 45,000, a mountain bike CLP 25,000 a day and a winter ski day around CLP 79,900 with transport. A day with no booked activity — hostel bed, market lunch, the lakefront — costs a fraction of any of them.

Villarrica can only be climbed with an authorised guide and hired gear, so the ascent is a fixed six-figure-peso line you either accept or skip, and the national park ticket is separate and sold through CONAF's Pases Parques site. Climbs are cancelled outright on wind or volcanic alert level, so leave spare days rather than spare money.

Overnight semi-cama services run Santiago–Pucón in roughly 11 hours with Turbus and the other national operators, and short buses shuttle Villarrica–Pucón through the day. Booking a few days ahead in high season is the difference between a reclining seat and a long night.

The black-sand town beach, the La Poza jetty and the walk out along the peninsula cost nothing, and the volcano is in view from all three. Pairing one of these with a self-catered dinner is how you absorb an expensive adventure day.
