PICK YOUR BASE
There is exactly one settlement, Hanga Roa, and every bed on the island is in it or just above it — so the real choice is the harbour end, the Tahai side, or a room in someone's house.
Hanga Roa centre — Atamu Tekena and Te Pito o Te Henua
The two streets carrying the shops, the rental agencies, the dive outfits and most of the restaurants, a few minutes' walk from the harbour. If you are here for a short trip without a vehicle, stay inside this triangle.

The Tahai side — north of the village
The coast road running north past the museum towards the Tahai ahu, quieter, with the sunset platform at the end of it. Ten to twenty minutes' walk from the shops, and the side to pick if you want to walk to sunset rather than drive to it.

Residenciales and cabanas in the back lanes
Family-run rooms and self-catering cabins through Hanga Roa's residential streets — the cheapest beds on the island by a wide margin and how most independent travellers stay. Book before you fly; there is no walk-in market here.

All-inclusive lodges above the village
Explora Rapa Nui and Nayara Hangaroa sit outside the centre and bundle guides, meals and transfers into the rate — Explora's also covers national park entrance fees. Expensive, and the only way to see the island without arranging a single thing yourself.
