A tiny seaside town of ruined modernist villas and one very good idea: crab, wok-fried with green pepper, eaten with your hands by the sea.
Kep crab market
Wooden stalls on the shore where crab comes straight from the traps, wok-fried with green Kampot pepper. Cheapest and best around lunch.
Kep National Park loop
An eight-kilometre trail circling the hill behind town through forest, with viewpoints over the gulf and a couple of scruffy jungle cafes.
Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)
A 25-minute boat to a low-key island of white sand, hammocks and basic bungalows. Boats go out mid-morning, back late afternoon.
Abandoned villa hunt
Modernist houses built for Cambodia's elite in the 1950s and 60s, wrecked in the war years and now sunk in vegetation around the lanes.
Kep beach and salt fields
A short imported-sand beach for a swim, and flat salt pans just inland that flash white in the dry season and are still worked by hand.
From Kampot by road
Twenty-five kilometres east, about 40 minutes by tuk-tuk, taxi or hired scooter. Most people day-trip; staying the night is better.
Bus from Phnom Penh
Around four hours direct on National Road 3, with several daily minivans. Some services route via Kampot and take a little longer.
Train to Kampot, then road
The southern-line train serves Kampot, not Kep, so finish the last 25km by tuk-tuk. Check the sparse timetable before committing.
Best time to go
November to March: calm sea, dry days and the salt pans being worked.
Cheapest months
May to September, when the rain empties guesthouses and rates fall.
Priciest & busiest
Late December to early January, and Khmer New Year in April.
Morning
Walk the Kep National Park loop early, before the sun gets over the ridge.
Late morning
Wander the lanes hunting abandoned 1960s villas swallowed by the jungle.
Lunch
Crab market: pepper crab, squid and a cold beer at a table over the water.
Afternoon
Boat out to Koh Tonsay for a swim and a hammock, or laze on Kep beach.
Evening
Sunset from the seafront promenade, then seafood again, because it is that good.
