Kampot · Where to stay

The blocks of French shophouses between the river and the old market, holding most of the restaurants, bars and mid-range rooms. It is the only part of Kampot where you can eat, drink and get home without a moto.

A few kilometres upstream, a string of bungalow places along the water with hammocks, kayaks and the sun going down behind Bokor. Quieter and better value, but you are committed to a shuttle or a moto every time you want dinner in town.

The lanes east of town towards Kep run through flat green country with a scattering of small guesthouses and farm stays. It suits people with their own transport and a plan that is not centred on Kampot town.

Through the wet months the river runs high and brown, Bokor spends most days in cloud and the riverside bungalows are damp. In that season the old town — solid walls, and a walk rather than a ride to dinner — is worth the extra.
