WITH KIDS
Beaches, a cable car and a rainforest inside the city — Rio entertains children without much planning.
Rio coastline with Dois Irmãos peaks
Praia Vermelha
A short, sheltered cove between two hills with almost no shorebreak, right beside the Sugarloaf cable car station. Suits any age.
Sugarloaf cable car
Two cable-car stages to a granite summit, with a monkey-filled terrace halfway. Go before ten to skip the queue. Ages 3 and up.
AquaRio aquarium
A large aquarium in the redeveloped port district, with an Atlantic reef tunnel; combine it with the Museu do Amanhã next door. Ages 3 and up.
Jardim Botânico
Avenues of imperial palms, a children's playground and marmosets in the trees; flat paths throughout, so pushchairs are fine. Any age.
Eat by the kilo
Por-quilo buffets serve from midday to mid-afternoon, take high chairs and let fussy eaters choose. Keep children off the sand between eleven and three.
